Our first date for this shoot got rained out. It was one of about 7 shoots I had to reschedule due to rain this year (thanks a lot Virginia). They also had rain during their proposal a little over a year ago, so I don’t know maybe the rain just loves them! But thankfully it did NOT rain during this shoot! I’m SO glad rescheduling worked out because we had such a beautiful day for Ashley and Steve’s engagement pictures.
Ashley has become a great friend of mine over the last year. She is also a photographer and she second shoots for me a lot so we have gotten to know each other pretty well! It’s also made planning the photography aspect of her day 10 times easier since she already understands everything and knows what I’m going to ask anyways! They are planning a dream destination wedding in Lake Tahoe and I am literally counting down the days. Since we’re both photographers, we are both all for getting the epic scenic shots and it makes my photographer heart so happy!
I met up with Ashley and Steve at Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane, VA and Y’ALL. The scenery is so stunning! If you’re looking for a gorgeous Saturday winery to visit, Barrel Oak is great! We explored a little bit and found some perfect locations for pictures. They have everything from a cute garden, to stunning scenic views, to a cute little pond, to willow trees. I’m telling you, it was a photographers dream! Ashley and I were so excited.
It’s sort of funny photographing other photographers. Ashley already knows all of the tricks I use! Especially when it comes to posing. I have lots of tactics to make people comfortable in front of the camera, but Ashley sees it all since she shoots with me so much! It was a nice challenge to try and come up with some new ideas.
Aside from the actual shoot (which was so fun!) by far my favorite part was after! We grabbed a bottle of wine, sat outside and talked until 10pm when the winery finally turned the lights off to kick us out! I love clients turned friends. I love love love to hear all of the wedding details and I ask lots of questions during the shoot, But getting together for drinks or dinner before or after the engagement shoot gives me such a great time of getting to know my couples even better! You can only do so much talking while shooting. It’s kind of like being at the dentist when they ask you a question but they have their hands in your mouth so you can’t answer. When we talk during the shoot, I’m asking questions but you can’t always answer because you have to smile. So I love that these wanted to hang out for awhile after!
Steve and Ashley, I am so thankful that photography brought us together and that you have become such good friends of mine! Steve, thanks for putting up with all of Ashley and my business talk. I also love getting to hear all about your fun life milestones (being homeowners, dog owners, and soon to be newlyweds)! Sorry that we all got chiggers but I hope these pictures are more than worth it!
